Bodrum is a district and a port city of the Mugla Province which is located in the Southwestern Aegean region of Turkey. It is strategically located on the southern part of the Bodrum Peninsula, from which any entry into the Gulf of Gokova can be controlled.



The city was called Halicarnassus of Caria in ancient times and is well-known for the Mausoleum of Mausolus, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Bodrum Castle, which was built in the 15th century, overlooks the harbour and the marina and it is the main landmark of the town with its five towers and 30,000 m2 ground areas. The castle was named after St. Petrus and after that the town was called Petrium, which evolved to Petrum, Potrum and then finally Bodrum. The castle hosts several cultural festivals throughout the year and its grounds include the second largest Museum of Underwater Archaeology. It is the most preserved castle in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Bodrum has a mixture of an Aegean and Mediterranean climate. A winter average high of 15 °C (59 °F) and in the summer 34 °C (93 °F). Summers are hot and dry with months of full sunny periods. Winters are mild and rainy with sunny breaks.
